Local elementary school students will have an opportunity to put their math skills to the test on Saturday, Jan. 26, during the 12th Annual Math Stars Competition hosted by the Tallahassee School of Math and Science.

During the competition, TSMS will open its doors to third, fourth and fifth graders from schools across Leon County, offering a chance for students to win a variety of prizes.

“We look forward to recognizing young mathematicians through our annual Math Stars Competition in January,” said Ahmet Temel, principal of TSMS. “Our hope is that the event will spark continued interest and achievement in math among participating students for years to come.”

The Math Stars Competition will commence at 8:30 a.m. with light refreshments and a tour of the school. Two rounds of competition will follow, concluding with the award ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Mini-events such as science demonstrations, Hidato and speed math will be held before the lunch break.

The top three “Math Stars” will receive a $100, $75 and $50 gift card, respectively. Trophies will be awarded to the top five contestants, and medals will be awarded to those in sixth through 10th places.

Registration to participate in the Math Stars Competition is open until Wednesday, Jan. 23, and requires a fee of $10, which includes lunch. To register, please visit http://schoolofmathandscience.org/index.php/academics/math-stars.
