mrtemelTallahassee School of Math and Science Principal Ahmet Temel was recently honored with a 2017 Principal Leadership Award (PLA) from Florida TaxWatch. The PLA program, which was established in 2013, identifies principals around the state who have had the greatest impact on their students in K-12 public schools where educational success can be transformative. Temel was one of nine principals in Florida – and the only principal from Leon County – to receive the award.

“I am incredibly honored to receive the Principal Leadership Award from Florida TaxWatch, as it is a testament to our school’s philosophy that educational success can only be realized when the student-teacher-parent triad is established and maintained,” said Ahmet Temel, principal of TSMS. “I look forward to building on our school’s progress through continued collaboration and individualized attention to each student’s unique learning style.”

Each year, PLA winners are determined based on an analysis of student achievement gains in reading and mathematics in schools that have high percentages of students with disabilities, students eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch and students designated as English as a Second Language learners. The Principal Leadership Awards are data-driven, based on performance and results; no nominations are accepted for the awards.

“This year’s nine exceptional principals have dedicated their lives to assure that their students are successful, both in and out of the classroom. Their innovative leadership and passion have created a solid learning environment that will guarantee a bright future for the state of Florida and its next generation of leaders,” said Dominic M. Calabro, President and CEO of Florida TaxWatch. “Florida TaxWatch is honored to partner with great public and private groups to provide this award, and I join all of the program sponsors in congratulating this year’s nine extraordinary educational leaders for their accomplishments leading to this evidence-based recognition.”

The principals will be recognized in Orlando next spring at the Annual Florida TaxWatch Principal Leadership Awards presentation. Three principals will take home top honors and an additional cash prize for their work with Florida students.

In addition to being rewarded for their work, each winning principal will have an opportunity to select a deserving student in their school to receive a two-year Florida College Plan scholarship as part of the Academic A+ Student Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation & Florida TaxWatch.
