Frequently Asked Questions

What is a charter school?

A charter school is a public school of choice. Charter schools are granted greater flexibility in their operations. In return for this flexibility charter schools are expected to perform at a higher level of standard on both test scores and graduation rates.

TSMS serves grades Kindergarten through 8th.

Charter schools are tuition-free, like all public schools. All students, regardless of background, are eligible to submit an application.

The average is 18/1. Smaller class size enables more one-on-one time between the teacher and students. Our charter restricts our enrollment; once we reach our maximum enrollment capacity all applications will be placed on our waiting list.

All school closings, holidays and early dismissal days are listed on the school calendar issued at the beginning of the school year. If you do not have one, please visit our website at www.schoolofmathandscience.org

School closings will be announced on all local television stations. If the LCS are closed, the TSMS will also be closed. Please visit our website at www.schoolofmathandscience.org for any updates regarding school closings.

If your child will be tardy or absent due to illness or injury, please notify your child’s teacher and then fill out the student absence form, uploading any necessary documentation about the absence (e.g. doctor, dentist, etc.) by using the following link:  https://forms.diamondmindinc.com/schoolofmathandscience/studentabsence?token=1245376574, no later than the day of the absence.  If your child has an appointment during school hours (e.g. doctor, dentist, etc.), please sign your child into or out of school in the main office. The main office will notify your child’s teachers of the absence.

Bus transportation is provided on a first-come first-served basis for students living outside the 2-mile zone. If you are not sure if you live outside the 2-mile zone, please see the No Transportation Zone Map on the Transportation Policy page on the TSMS website under “Services.” The bus stops used are primarily “Area Stops” where parents will need to drive their students and wait for the bus to arrive. Students residing within the 2-mile zone are not eligible for bus transportation.

A bus registration form must be completed for each student who wishes to be a regular bus rider. Students may not board a TSMS bus until a bus registration form has been submitted and approved by the Transportation Coordinator or the Administration. Route sheets are revised each summer and will be available on our website before school starts. http://tsmas.org/index.php/services/bus-routes

Children need healthy meals to learn! TSMS offers healthy meal choices to all students through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). Our participation in CEP means that we can provide breakfast and lunch at no charge to ALL students enrolled at TSMS during the school year.

Yes, we have a tutoring program at our school. Every student is eligible for extra help on an as needed basis. All of our teachers stay after school for extra help, or for students to make up missed work. A schedule of teachers staying after school will be made available at the beginning of each school year.

TSMS has implemented an Advanced Program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The Advance Program includes small group, advanced instruction in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. Students who are in Advanced Program also can earn high school credits in the middle school, such as Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, and Foreign Language. Criteria for entry are based on student benchmarks, classroom performance, teacher recommendation, and state test results.
